September 2012

  • SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 1 & SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 2

Theater for the New City Presents The Shalom Bombay Show.
    with Kumar Das on Tabla.

A dramatic and spiritual sixty minute adventure of music and monologues that explores two distinct cultures in two distinct ways. Jewish culture, Indian culture, the combination of jazz piano with Indian tabla and the telling of personal, cultural stories by the musicians on stage. Using elements of jazz improvisation and the oral tradition, "Shalom Bombay" is meant to be a conversation between the performers on stage and with the audience at the same time. The monologues utilize the foundations of the oral tradition where there is no fourth wall and the story itself is scripted orally and changes during each performance based on audience response.

    Max ZT on Dulcimer

    and Ehren Hanson on Tabla.

Come out and experience what these premier musicians of Indian Classical Music have to offer. Ehren has been playing tabla for over 17 years. He is an active performer as both a soloist and an accompanist. His recent review in the "Times of India," Kolkata called his solo performance "enthralling."

Max ZT has enlivened the conceptual framework of traditional folk music by fusing multi-cultural roots and traditions to create a truly compelling sound. His fresh perspective and bold experimentalism have been the backbone to beautiful, complex, and genuine compositions, while his unorthodox playing style has been a pioneering force in revolutionizing dulcimer techniques.

    SATURDAY SEPT 8 @ 1PM to 7PM

Celebrating the 7st "Sun to Stars Festival of Asian Dance, Music & Culture".

Inspired by the traditional all-night concerts along Indias Ganges River, Sun to Stars evokes the traditional durbar and bethak-style concerts where performers and audiences interact in an informal setting to create an intimate artistic experience. With a backdrop defined by both natural and urban elements, the performers present work that grapples with the environment, be it through mythological folktales or a particular raga connected to nature. This highly unique program is a highlight of the Green Energy Arts Festival. Sun To Stars evokes long, steamy nights relaxing by the Ganges River, because it takes place on a similar, typically steamy New York City summer day and night as attendees relax along the East River.

In Celebration of Sri Ganesh Chaturthi, Carnatic vocal recital by Aditya Venkatesh.

Aditya Venkatesh is one of the most promising up and coming artistes in the field of Carnatic music. As a young child, his grandmother noticed his passion for music when he could sing Rara venu gopala at the age of three. Since then began his musical journey. Born and brought up in Mumbai, Aditya had his initial training under the able guidance of Gurus Sri. Anantharaman Bhagavathar and Sri. Chandrasekar Bhagavathar in Chembur, Mumbai.

His passion for music brought him to Chennai after his high school. Being a Biotechnology student at Anna University, it was his sheer dedication and devotion to the art that enabled him to manage both studies and music and yet maintain high standards in both fields.

In Chennai, he trained under eminent gurus like Sri. V. Subrahmaniam, Smt. Padma Sandilyan and Kalaimamani Sri. Srimushanam V. Raja Rao and most recently, under Smt. Shanta Subramaniam, an eminent musicologist and critic from the DKJ school. Under her guidance, Aditya picked up the DKJ style with ease and side by side, learnt a number of padams and javalis (scholarly compositions on the theme of Sringara rasa).

Studio 39 presents "Discover what it takes to record Indian instruments in the studio and learn to play the Tabla and the Khartal". With Sid Metha.

Experience how Indian instruments play and record differently - Watch Sid record a live track and try your hand at playing the instruments. Learn about the evolution and influence of these Indian instruments during a recording session with Sid. Hell walk you through the process of laying down a track in the studio before allowing you to get hands-on with the Tabla, Khartal, and a variety of rare classical instruments. For producers, songwriters, and overall music lovers, this experience could be the springboard for a whole new source of inspiration.

Playing the Tabla and the Khartal are a little like taking a trip to some far away land. But even though they represent an entirely different culture, having access to these instruments at home means we dont have to get on a flight to Bombay to experience Bollywood music or a sense of eye-opening travel. As a native of India, Sid Meta grew up surrounded by these classical Indian instruments and has spent his life mastering how to play them. Currently, hes working to fuse their unique sounds with modern Western music to produce another dimension of sound.

Chhandayan Center for Indian Music presents a n Hindustani Vocal concert!

Suranjana Bose - vocal
Madhu Vora - harmonium

Suranjana Bose, one of the rising stars in the horizon of the Indian classical and semi classical music, is the new worthy representative of the country's rich musical heritage to the outside world. An exponent of Patiala Gharana, Suranjana is also proficient in Thumri, Dadra, Bhajan and Bengali Songs . Despite her brilliant academic background,a 1st class in Graduation, Post Graduation as well as in B.ED from Calcutta University, she instead choose to devote herself completely to the classical music with an equally shinning musical career . Suranjana received her initial training in classical music from Pt.Hariprasad Das and later she had the privilege of being a disciple of Late Pt. Prasun Bandopadhya and Meera Bandopadhdya of Patiala Gharana and doyen of Thumri, Dr. Girija Devi of Benaras Gharana .But her thirst of knowledge was not quenched and she was fortunate to come under the tutelage and kind patronage of several renowned singers like Purabi Dutta, Sukumar Mitra, Amalendu Bikash Kar Choudhury, Dilip Das, Mandira Lahiri, and noteworthy Pt. Ajay Chakraborty. Hence it's no wonder that Suranjana has cut a deep niche for herself in other light classical genres Bengali songs apart from Thumri, Dadra, Kheyal and Bhajan cult.. http://www.suranjana.com/thyself.htm

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 22 @ 8:00 PM

Presented by the Asian American Arts Alliance's Locating the Sacred Festival in collaboration with Alwan for the Arts.

Ushq Ensemble presents a melding of conversant traditions of spiritual, improvisatory music from the Middle East and Central Asia that share a common ground in Sufism, poetry and related maqm systems. This collaboration, entitled Ushq, brings together Indian-American vocalist Falu Shah; Iraqi-American Amir ElSaffar on the santr (hammered dulcimer), trumpet, and vocals, Palestinian Zafer Tawil on the 'oud (Middle Eastern lute) and violin; Iranian musician Hedayat Shafeei on the tr (long-necked double chamber lute); and Tunisian musician Taoufiq ben Amor on percussion and vocals.

Falu Shah is widely recognized for a rare ability to blend, seamlessly and inventively, a signature modern rock style with an Indian classical vocal style. In her early years in Bombay, she was trained rigorously in the Jaipur musical tradition, at times honing her talent for up to 16 hours a day. Falu moved to the States in 2000 and developed a band of the same name. Falus live performances have been featured nationally on FOX TV and internationally on National Geographic TV, while her voice has been captured in multiple films including Angelina Jolies directorial debut A Place in Time. Other recent collaborations include with classical music legend Yo-Yo Ma, funk pioneers Parliament-Funkadelic and blues-rock band Blues Traveler.
