SUNDAY OCTOBER 24 @ 4:00 PM

The East Indian Music Academy presents a Shehnai Concert by the extraordinary talents of Ustad Bismillah Khan’s favorite disciple, Pt. Shailesh Bhagwat on Shehnai.

The Shehnai is an aerophonic instrument which is thought to bring good luck, and as a result, is widely used in India for marriages and processions. This tube-like instrument gradually widens towards the lower end. It usually has between six and nine holes. It employs two sets of double reeds, making it a quadruple reed woodwind. By controlling the breath, various tunes can be played on it.

Pt. Shailesh Bhagwat was under the tutelage of Ustad Bismillah Khan for 37 years and is now his best-known disciple. This is his first trip to the US, a long-awaited, rare opportunity to listen to the haunting tone of what may be the most revered musical instrument of India. Please visit www.shehnaai.com to learn more about the shehnai and Ustad Bismillah Khan.

The Manhattan Sikh Center presents

sitarist Pt. Subroto Roy Chowdhury

and Naren Budhkar on Tabla.

Deeply infatuated with Dhrupad tradition and raag-dari, Subroto Roy Chowdhury stepped back in history to return to classicism under the dominant influence of Birendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury,Veena Sursringar, and Sur-Rabab player of Gouripur. The alap and jod (slow meditative raag elaboration) was Subroto's first love like that of his guru Birendra Kishore. This drove him to the famous Senior Dagar brothers, Mohinuddin and Aminuddin. Eventually he became a “ganda bandhan“ Shagird (disciple) of Ustad Nasir Aminuddin Khan Dagar, a famous Dhrupad Singer.

Subroto later in life got a glimpse of the Jaipur-Senia Sitar baj of Western India (Pachao or Pashchim Ke Sitar) during his brief stint with Pdt. Bimal Mukherjee.  The Smooth Veena Meend Ang and Rababi bol banis are Subroto's forte.

WEDNESDAY OCT. 27 @ 7:00 PM

Rubin Museum of Art presents

Amit Chaudhuri Band.

Novelist and musician Amit Chaudhuri engages in conversation with philosopher Simon Critchley followed by a concert bringing together the raga with jazz, rock, and the blues. http://www.telegraphindia.com/1050119/asp/calcutta/story_4264018.asp

Amit Chaudhuri, vocals

Mayookh Bhowmick, tabla

Matt Hodges, piano

Adam Moore, electric guitar

Paul Williams, bass

Calcutta-born singer Amit Chaudhuri's follow-up to This Is Not Fusion ( Babel , 2010) is another captivating and deeply idiosyncratic fusion/not fusion of Hindustani classical music, jazz, rock and blues. It's a style Chaudhuri, with several albums of "pure" Hindustani music already behind him, began developing in 2004 with the Amit Chaudhuri Band, which features his singing alongside electric guitars and keyboards, acoustic trumpet and tabla. If you haven't heard the band before, you're in for a treat—dreamy raga-based discusions which incorporate the acid rock songbook, trumpeter Miles Davis <http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/musician.php?id=6144> ' modal legacy, Delta blues and retro Tin Pan Alley.
