    Classical Concepts presents… Dhrupad Vocalist

    Pt. Uday Bhawalkar

Uday Bhawalkar is a standard bearer for Dhrupad, and a strong force in its growing recognition and popularity. Uday believes that when immersed in the note and raga, the self disappears and music takes on its own existence; the principle of ‘darshan’. These values are helping him on the path of devotion to Dhrupad.Dhrupad is one of the oldest forms of North Indian classical music and Uday maintains its majesty and subtle nuances. Dhrupad is a living and evolving classical music tradition. Uday has developed a unique style deeply embedded in raga ras and bhaav.

Dhrupad is one of the oldest forms of North Indian classical music and Uday maintains its majesty and subtle nuances. Dhrupad is a living and evolving classical music tradition. Uday has developed a unique style deeply embedded in raga ras and bhaav. This brings a creative melodic addition to the precise intonation and pronunciation characteristic to the Dhrupad style. Uday spent over 12 years studying and living in the traditional guru-shishya parampara with Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar (Vocal) and Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar (Rudra-Veena), the towering pillars of the Dhrupad tradition. During this period there was a simple and complete concentration on the music itself. This intimate relationship, in which the Ustads willingly gave their inner secrets along with Uday’s devotion, brought him to a deep sense of completeness and wholeness.

Barun Kumar Pal - Hansa Veena

    Ray Spiegel- Tabla

Barun Kumar Pal, master of the Hansa Veena (Hindustani slide guitar) will perform ragas in tribute to Pt. Ravi Shankar, his guru.  The concert, a benfit by Matagiri (Julian Lines) is dedicated to Ravi Shankar's legacy.  I will accompany on tabla.  It is also notable that I have spent decades as a disciple of tabla maestro Ustad Alla Rakha, who was the tabla accompanist for Pt. Ravi Shankar for the bulk of his career, and his best concerts and recordings.  Barunji and I  are both recipients of the knowledge and style of both of these musical giants, a fitting tribute to their legacy.

Samita Sinha’s vocal performance practice integrates raw utterance, speech, song, and raga (Indian tonal systems) with sensitivity to the body, and explores an elemental, primal way of sounding.

Samita Sinha is an artist and vocalist/ composer based in New York. She combines tradition with experiment to create new forms, drawing from a deep grounding in North Indian classical music, a contemporary vocabulary, folk and ritual music, and songs and texts in several languages. Her work reconfigures given inheritances, and combines raw, visceral energy with knowledge garnered from classical tradition. She has studied Hindustani music with Dr. Alka Deo Marulkar and Shiv Shankar Pandey, and currently trains with Shubhangi Sakhalkar.

As a composer/ performer and improviser, Sinha uses her voice as her primary instrument, along with tanpura and analog and digital electronics. She has performed her solo and ensemble work at PS 1, Roulette, Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concerts, Blue Note, and Issue Project Room, at universities such as UC Berkeley, NYU, Macalaster College, and St. Olaf, as well as abroad in India and the Middle East. Sinha also performs with ANATOMY, a duo Hindustani/ jazz groove-heavy electronic music project with Marc Cary, and uses her voice as an improvising instrument in jazz ensembles including Marc Cary’s FOCUS and Sunny Jain Collective.

Lee Torchia, Kirana Gharana Vocalist, is a 20-year disciple of Pandit Pran Nath, Master of North Indian Classical Vocal Music and disciple of the legendary Ustad Abdul Waheed Khan.  She traveled often with him to India and performed and taught with him in Paris.  She also studied with his famous disciples, composers La Monte Young and Terry Riley.  They are among the highest authorities of the American Minimalist and Microtonal traditions. Kirana gharana focuses on the alap, the slow unfolding of the precise pitches of the raga to connect the breath to the Divine.  Lee has performed solo Hindustani Classical Vocal concerts at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center, Pace University, Penn State Scranton, Pratt Institute, and others, as well as ashrams and spiritual sites in India.  She was adjunct faculty at the New School University Jazz Department, and continues to perform, lecture and teach raga singing.  Lee accompanies herself with the traditional string drone instrument, the tambura. Lee is committed to both the Jazz and Raga Classical art forms, and has developed an East/West fusion style called JazzRaga.http://www.jazzraga.com

    FRIDAY JUNE 14 @ 8:00pm

    Sitar Concert with  Ikhlaq Hussain

Vishal Nagar will accompany on tabla.
The two short recitals by students Liz Hogg and Jack Neustadt will be followed by concert.

Ikhlaq Hussain Khan is a virtuoso sitarist from a centuries-long line of influential musicians of the Delhi Gharana, dating back to the very creator of the instruments 'sitar' and 'tabla' in the early 13th century, Sufi Saint Hazrat Amir Khusrao.
While his lineage is known for their proliferative work in the field of tabla and rhythmic expression/composition, Ikhlaq's grandfather, Ustad Ahmadi Khan, was the first to choose a different instrument, sarangi. In turn, Ikhlaq's father, the eminent Ustad Imdad Hussain, chose to devote his musical life to sitar. Ikhlaq's immediate family was relocated to Pakistan during partition, and still resides in Karachi. Ikhlaq Hussain, now a resident of New York City, was granted permanent residency in the U.S. on the basis of his extraordinary music ability; a category reserved for individuals with unusually exceptional talents. This has been a testimony to his virtuosity. Ikhlaq Hussain has followed in the footsteps of his forefathers, captivating audiences worldwide with his highly artistic sensibilities and skillful playing. Ikhlaq plays in the Gayaki Ang (or vocal manner of playing). It is perhaps the most difficult form of playing the sitar. It involves 'sytematic use of pitch deflecting technique, where by pulling the strings across the frets and varying their tension, the player can produce intricate melodie phrases from a single stroke of the plectrum. Thus, emulating the human voice to a degree normally unattainable on plucked instruments'.
