    SATURDAY JANUARY 4 @ 7:30 PM
Chhandayan Center for Indian Music presents:

    Gurubhai Jugalbandi of Bansuri Flute:

Krishna Bhandari  (senior disciple of Pt Raghunath Seth)  & Steve Gorn
    Dibyarka Chatterjee  - Tabla

A leading flautist of the country, Krishna Bhandari is a Senior Disciple of flute maestro and music composer Pt. Raghunath Seth, disciple of the legendary and unmatched flute maestro Pt. Pannalal Ghosh. Bhandari's style reflects a unique blend of fluency and melody with systematic "Badhat" and aesthetic approach giving due weight  to both "Gayaki" and "Gatkari". Use of key in his flute, invented by his guru Pt. Raghunath Seth unfolds 'Ragas' beautifully in Mandra Saptak.

Steve Gorn is featured on the 2011 Grammy winning recording, “Miho – Journey to the Mountain, “with Dhruba Ghosh, and The Paul Winter Consort, and the Academy Award winning Documentary film,  “Born into Brothels.”. His gurus are the bansuri masters, Sri Gour Goswami, and Sri Deba Prasad Banerjee of Kolkata, and Pandit Raghunath Seth. His bansuri style is based in the ‘gayaki ang’ of the legendary Pannalal Ghosh, and his music has been described as a transformative experience that synchronizes mind and body and realigns the molecular cell structure.

Dibyarka Chatterjee is a Tabla player from the Farrukhabad Gharnana, and the son and disciple of Pandit Samir Chatterjee.  At the age of five he was initiated by his father into the ancient system of ‘guru-shishya-parampara’ He has performed in India and the west with many leading artists, including Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Sujaat Khan, Pandita Lakshmi Shankar, and Pt Ramesh Misra.

    MONDAY JANUARY 13 @ 8:15PM & 9:15PM

Kiran Ahluwalia in NYC - Bringing her group to Cornelia St Cafe!

    Featuring:
Kiran Ahluwalia, voice;  Rez Abbasi , guitar;  Will Holshouser, accordion;  Mamadou Ba , bass;  Sameer Gupta , tabla

At the center of Kiran Ahluwalia’s music is love in all its shades - yearning romantic love and sufi mysticism. She is a modern exponent of the great vocal traditions of India and Pakistan which she honors intensely yet also departs from in assertive, personal ways. Her original compositions and arrangements embody the spiritual essence of ghazal, a form of poetry about the unattainable. Accompanied by traditional Indian percussion and contemporary Western instruments, Ahluwalia’s boundary-blurring songs invite us to explore the human condition, transcending the self by losing ourselves in love.
Born in India, raised in Canada – Ahluwalia's latest CD, Aam Zameen: Common Ground was recently awarded Kiran’s second Canadian Grammy - the prestigious JUNO Award. Her discography, now five albums deep is one of global music’s most interesting furrows. Her ease of manner on stage makes her a unique and inspiring performer who’s legion of fans continues to grow with every captivating performance.
Her music has garnered glowing praise from critics around the world. “Ahluwalia is busy honing a transnational sound as fresh as tomorrow” (Seattle Times) and “Her’s is “a voice destined to enchant more than one generation” (fROOTS).
