Two of the best known North Indian classical musicians of Banaras wil be stopping through NYC on their Banaras Soul Music Tour. Don't miss this opportunity to hear traditional North Indian classical music by two of its finest exponents. Ravindra Goswami is rare among sitarist in that he performs the ancient drupad style, and he was also my first sitar teacher! The Amit Chaudhuri Band and Qian Yi and the Du Yun Quartet!

     Presented by the Asia Society.

Amit Chaudhuri's band is not fusion, but a hybrid meeting of his musical worlds, which collide in Hindustani vocals with hints of Derek and the Dominoes. Chaudhuri has not only studied classical Hindustani music, but also focused many of his novels on Indian singers. His music is a hybrid of this classical form, as well as Western popular music.

Qian Yi was the star of her generation of Kun performers, but more recently been  experimenting with new forms. Composer Du Yun creates an avant-garde soundscape in which Qian Yi and Li Liqun retell the story Slaying of the Tiger General.

    THURSDAY NOVEMBER 10 @ 8PM

World Premiere of Digital Buddha II (2011) Conceived by Jin Hi Kim, video mandala by Joel Cadman, digital images by Benton-C Bainbridge Interpretations Concert with two innovative projects integrating traditional instruments of Japan, Korea and India.

    Performed by:

Composer Jin Hi Kim (komungo/electric komungo, Buddhist barrel drums)
    Samir Chatterjee (tabla)

    Thomas Buckner (voice)
    Ralph Samuelson & Yoko Hiraoka.

Jin Hi Kim’s “Digital Buddha" begins with a hypnotic, contemplative video mandala and the ancient 4th century acoustic komungo that is rooted in Buddhist meditation. The collaboration between komungo and tabla presents an Eastern calm in a contemporary time sense. Kim's solo on the world's only electric komungo has her processing the komungo sound through a personal computer program, electrified and altered sounds via MIDI foot pedal control of a custom MAX/MSP program. While staying true to the nature of the instrument, her electric komungo solo performance interweaves the timeless tradition with space-age blips. The collaboration between voice and electric komungo is an attempt to express the longevity of the sun. The program ends with a drum duo pounding for the dark energy of universe. The concert performed without breaks has a range of interlocking and overlapping images and music from quiet contemplation to romping ecstasy.

The World Music Institute presents "Jewels of the Desert"

The Rhythm of Rajasthan

The Rhythm of Rajasthan ensemble with its enthralling music and dance hails from the windswept Great Thar Desert in Rajasthan (“the land of kings”), a region that has one of the liveliest folk traditions in India. The musicians, from the Langa (“song giver”) and Manghaniyar hereditary groups of itinerant entertainers, return to New York with their program encompassing driving percussion, ecstatic Sufi songs, and hypnotic sarangi (bowed lute) and algoza (double flute). They are joined by the famed Suva Devi, a dancer seen in Tony Gatlif’s film Latcho Drom, who performs the sinuous Kalbeliya Sapera snake-charming dance and the spectacular Bhavai folk dance.

Presented by Carnegie Hall in partnership with World Music Institute.

Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall,

57th Street and 7th Avenue, NYC
