In 2004,  he completed an Individual Major in  Jazz Performance at  Oberlin College/Conservatory of Music (Ohio),  studying privately under such Jazz luminaries as the saxophonist Gary Bartz and trumpetist Marcus Belgrave.   He has since collaborated extensively with many noted Jazz musicians including composer/Jazz pianist Courtney Bryan and trumpetist Lech Wierzynski. A  recipient  of the prestigious  American  Institute of  Indian  Studies  Senior Performing Arts Fellowship, he currently splits his time between New York City and Mumbai, India.

Ray Spiegel began his study of tabla at 13,  and attended the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, CA starting in 1970.  His main teacher and influence is the famous tabla master Ustad Alla Rakha with whom Ray maintained a very close relationship over twenty five years.  Ray has also studied extensively with Ustad Zakir Hussain, and Sri B.S. Ramanna of New Delhi.   He has performed and recorded Indian classical music with many top Indian artists such as Aashish Khan, Sultan Khan, Ravi Shankar,  Irshad Khan, Barun Kumar Pal, Tejendra Mazumder, and vocalists Vidyadhar Vyas, Subhra Guha, Madhup Mudgal, Sanhita Nandi, and Raka Mukherjee among others.  Other credits include: the Grateful Dead, Diga Rhythm Band, Danilo Perez, Patty Smyth, Shunzo Ohno, Mickey Hart, among others.

TUESDAY AUGUST 28 to SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 2

Theater for the New City Presents “The Shalom Bombay Show”.
with Kumar Das on Tabla.

A dramatic and spiritual sixty minute adventure of music and monologues that explores two distinct cultures in two distinct ways. Jewish culture, Indian culture, the combination of jazz piano with Indian tabla and the telling of personal, cultural stories by the musicians on stage. Using elements of jazz improvisation and the oral tradition, "Shalom Bombay" is meant to be a conversation between the performers on stage and with the audience at the same time. The monologues utilize the foundations of the oral tradition where there is no fourth wall and the story itself is scripted orally and changes during each performance based on audience response.

Theater for the New City
155 First Avenue, New York, NY 10003 (Between 9th & 10th St.)

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 29 @ 9:00 PM

FREE demonstration by Siddharth J. Mehta on the 'Khartal'!

Khartal is an ancient instrument mainly used in devotional/ folk songs. It has derived its name from Hindi words ‘kara’ means hand and ‘tala’ means
clapping. This wooden clapper is a Ghana Vadya which has discs or plates that produce a clinking sound when clapped together. It falls under the
class of idiophones of self-sounding instruments that combine properties of vibrator and resonator. Usually made wood or metal, a khartal player
will hold one 'male' and 'female' Khartal in each hand. The 'male' khartal is usually thicker and is held with the thumb while the 'female' khartal
is usually thinner and is mainly balanced on the ring finger, which represents the fire element. It is associated with the sun and the root chakra. Its force provides staying power, stamina, and the power to be assertive. A pair of wooden castanets with bells attached to them was the earliest form of the khartal. These pieces of wood are not connected in any way, however they can be clapped together at high speeds to make rapid complex rhythms. Aside from being an excellent accompaniment instrument, khartal is the most portable percussion instrument in the world.
