Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan will be performing North India Classical Music as a distinguished exponent of the Kirana lineage of North Indian vocal music, and is related by blood to many of the most distinguished luminaries in that tradition. He displays great invention and vocal agility in his recitals. He is a walking encyclopedia of traditional compositions ("bandishes".

Akshara, the South Indian percussion ensemble led by A.R. Balaskandan, is an exciting new percussion group rooted in Indian classical musical traditions. Comprised of virtuosic performers in Carnatic and Hindustani classical genres, Akshara performs an energetic blend of classical Indian melody and rhythm highlighted with solo and scale-based improvisations. A unique feature is the use of vocal percussion, or Konnukol within the compositions. Melodic accompaniment is provided using Carnatic Violin, Flute and Vocals.
Ensemble members include AR Balaskandan, a talented performer of mridangam and Carnatic violin, Arun Ramamurthy and Trina Basu on violin, G. Balaganesh on morsing and kanjira, Zach Knight on kanjira and Thejeswini Raj and Bina Viju on konnukol.
Guest artists have included Nitin Mitta on tabla and Ilari Kaila on piano. Each member is an accomplished classical music artist and has performed worldwide as soloists and accompanists.

The Silk Road Ensemble is a collective of approximately 60 internationally renowned musicians, 
composers, arrangers, visual artists and storytellers from more than 20 countries. Each Ensemble member's career illustrates a unique response to what is one of the artistic challenges of our times: nourishing global connections while maintaining the integrity of art rooted in an authentic tradition.
Many of the musicians first came together under the artistic direction of Yo-Yo Ma at a workshop at Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts in 2000. Since then, in various configurations, Ensemble artists have collaborated on a diverse range of musical and multimedia projects, presenting innovative performances that explore the relationship between tradition and innovation in music from the East and West.

Having studied music from the age of five under various teachers, Sabina Islam came to the Sangeet Research Academy as a scholar in 1997, studying first with Pandit Sunil Bose of the Agra gharana (lineage) and then with her guru, Vidushi Subhra Guha. Her style of rendition displays a mellow blending with vidya, devoted learning, raagdari and rich gaikee that is both creative and aesthetically appealing. Sabina has performed from many prestigious platforms in India and received numerous awards.

Mallar Bhattacharya is a student of the instumental and vocal music of the Acharya Baba Allauddin Seni gharana of Maihar and Rampur, India. Mallar began his musical training at the age of three, learning both Western and Hindustani violin from his father Dr. Jahar Bhattacharya, a viola student of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. After taking regular lessons from Ustad Aashish Khan in high school, Mallar was inspired to focus on the sarode as he began his undergraduate studies in Boston. Now a medical student in Boston, Mallar has been learning regularly for several years from Dr. George Ruckert, senior disciple of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, and he continues to study with Aashish Khan several times a year. Mallar has also spent two summers of dedicated study at Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California, learning from Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.
He will be accompanied by Ranjan Nandi on Tabla.

Born in India, Sivamani is a gifted musician who has mastered over 100 instruments and has composed scores for numerous critically acclaimed films in India. He has worked with many distinguished musicians such as A. R. Rahman, who composed the scores for "Bombay Dreams" and academy award winner "Slumdog Millionaire." For over three decades Sivamani has been a composer for Indian films and has performed in many solo concerts all over the globe. Sivamani has performed in Singapore, London, South Africa and New York spreading the rhythm of India across the world. In the summer of 2007 when Tamarind Art presented Sivamani through a music event, Sivamani shook the New York crowd by a storm.

He is a walking encyclopedia of traditional compositions ("bandishes") and has an erudite concept of ragas and a keen understanding of the various aspects of the Kirana style, which emphasizes numerous creative permutations of the notes of the raga. An A-grade artiste of All India Radio, he has performed in numerous festival and conferences all over India and abroad. Khan Sahib is currently a senior vocal guru with the prestigious Sangeet Research Academy in Calcutta, passing on his musical heritage to new generations of musicians. Having studied music from the age of five under various teachers, Sabina Islam came to the Sangeet
Research Academy as a scholar in 1997, studying first with Pandit Sunil Bose of the Agra gharana (lineage) and then with her guru, Vidushi Subhra Guha, with whom she now lives in Kolkata in traditional "guru-shishya parampara" (guru-disciple relationship). In addition to Khyal, Sabina also sings Light Classical music like Thumri, Dadra and Tappa, which she has inherited from her guru in the perfect style of "Poorab Ang." Her style of rendition displays a mellow blending with vidya, devoted learning, raagdari and rich gaikee that is both creative and aesthetically appealing.
