Saxophonist Oded Tzur is rapidly gaining international acclaim for his groundbreaking musical work. He is considered by many to be the first saxophonist in the world to have developed a complete method for performing North Indian Classical Music on the saxophone, single-handedly creating a revolutionary approach to the instrument. Oded's innovative technique, known as “Ampis” (A Middle Path In Saxophone), had already been presented in prestigious institutions such as the 2011 British Saxophone Congress, Trinity College of Music, London, The Copenhagen Rhythmic Music Conservatory, The Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, and The Rotterdam Jazz Academy. http://www.odedtzur.com

Explore the sounds of an ancient tradition with a novel and cross - cultural approach. This intensive two - session workshop will present the core elements of North Indian Classical Music, an improvised art form, with a completely new model of practice derived from Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. Learn how to analyze Ragas (the melodic systems) using this model, and how to improvise with “Tonal Gravity” as a source of order and inspiration. Each class will end with a collective music making session that will allow the newly acquired knowledge to be experimented with. Open to instrumentalists and vocalists of all genres. Participants should bring their own instruments.

Chhandayan Center for Indian Music presents a n Hindustani Vocal concert!

    Manu Srivastava: Vocal

    Anil Khare: Tabla

    Kedar Naphade: Harmonium

Manu Srivastava started his Hindustani Classical Music training in Kanpur at the tender age of 4 under the guidance of Smt. Snigdha Biswas. He later continued his training in Canada and India under gurus such as Smt. Lata Sathe (disciple of Pt. Kumar Gandharva) Smt. Veena Shukla (disciple of Pt. Balwant Rai Bhatt) and Sri Shrikant Lagu and Pt. Arun Dravid. He mainly acquired his training in the tradition of Gwalior Gharana but a touch of Agra and Jaipur Gharana can be seen in his khayal gayaki.

What really changed Manu's outlook on Shastriya Sangeet was his vigorous training under the late Pt. Kashinath Shankar Bodas. Pandit Bodas brought out the best in Manu, inspiring him to refine his music through intense daily riyaz. He is now under the guidance of Smt. Padma Talwalkar. A chemical engineer by profession, Manu now teaches shastriya sangeet to over 70 students in the Phoenix Metro area.  He not only performs and teaches, he helps organize workshops and concerts in the Phoenix area for visiting artists from India.

Raised in Canada and the USA since the age of ten, he has unique understanding of both cultures and is an inspiration to his students. He believes that knowledge is the only way to get the younger generation interested in Shastriya Sangeet and hopes to impart it for many years to come. He has performed extensively in the Mid-west, Southwest and California.
