    Indian Ocean at BB King!

Indian Ocean are the biggest underground success in
India. A cult band in its own right, the group has amalgamated Indian folk music with Western rock. Their breakthrough album, Kandisa, released in 2000, catapulted Indian Ocean to national stardom and became one of the biggest-selling albums ever by an Indian band. "It's easy to notice what clicked with Indian Ocean—a focus on East Indian folk music that quickly gained attention from youthful listeners, an almost unplugged sound that complements their cultural attributes, and a rigid compact lineup with each member bringing in his unique technical preeminence, all rolled into a perfect body of work," wrote the All Music Guide.http://www.indianoceanmusic.com/

Paul Livingstone (sitar), Nitin Mitta (tabla) & Leticia Meza (tanpura).

International performing artist Paul Livingstone is one of
the few American artists to have learned directly from the living legend of Indian music Pandit Ravi Shankar.  He also learned from sarod maestro Rajeev Taranath.  Paul's authentic feel in performance of classical ragas and level of virtuosity of his sitar playing are rarely heard from artists of non-Indian origin.  In India, he was been recognized in the Calcutta press as "an Indian soul in white skin".  In the creative tradition of Hindustani (North Indian) classical music, Paul has been rigorously trained since 1985 in India and the US to play and improvise in the raga system (traditional melodic forms) on sitar. www.tanpura.com

SATURDAY OCTOBER 24 @ 8:00 PM

Sitar Concert by Maestro Ikhlaq Hussain

accompanied on Tabla by Dibyarka Chatterjee.

Sitarist Maestro Ikhlaq Hussain is one of the leading musicians of his generation, exhibiting great proficiency and originality. Trained by his father, Ustad Imdad Hussain and later by the legendary Pandit Ravi Shankar in India, Ikhlaq's lineage dates back to a centuries-long line of prominent musicians of the Delhi Gharana of Hindustani classical music. Ustad Ikhlaq Hussain Khan is a virtuoso sitarist from a centuries-long line of influential musicians of the Delhi Gharana, dating back to the very creator of the instruments 'sitar' and 'tabla' in the early 13th century, Sufi Saint Hazrat Amir Khusrao. Ikhlaq plays in the Gayaki Ang (or vocal manner of playing). It is perhaps the most difficult form of playing the sitar. It involves 'sytematic use of pitch deflecting technique, where by pulling the strings across the frets and varying their tension, the player can produce intricate melodie phrases from a single stroke of the plectrum. Thus, emulating the human voice to a degree normally unattainable on plucked instruments'. www.ragasitar.com
