JANUARY 2013

January 2013

  • SUNDAY JANUARY 6 @  1:00 PM

The CoSM presents art making and Indian Classical music by Eric fraser on Bansuri Flute and Naren Budhakar on tabla.

Eric is an exponent of a unique vocal style of North-Indian flute playing, which is known for it’s depth and purity. He has been learning intensively in the guru/sishya parampara tradition under the training of his guru Pt. Gopal Roy since 2003. With authenticity, pure tone, subtlety and maturity, Eric's playing is both emotionally and technically compelling, which immediately takes listeners on a journey. Eric is a 2011 Fulbright senior research scholar for Indian music, and has a diverse background playing for Indian classical dance, as well as in projects ranging from Jazz, World, New Age, Indie and more. Aside from playing Indian classical flute, Eric is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and a music therapist (MA, MT-BC) working with children. www.ericfraser.com

Naren Budhakar was born in Pune, the cultural capital of western India to a musical family. His hometown provided him with many opportunities to listen to great musicians. He was trained by Shabbir Nissar, the tabla wizard from Hyderabad and the son of legendary Ustad Shaikh Dawood. Naren's aesthetic sense allows him to complement his percussion to many different music forms. He has performed with Indian and American artists such as: Vocalists Pundit Jasraj, Dr.Alka Deo Marulkar, Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan, Anup Jalota, Terry Riley, and La Monte Young.

Please bring your own art supplies.
A sketch book and colored pencils, pens or a watercolor set is plenty.
To paint with acrylic, you must bring a drop cloth and a portable easel.

    THURSDAY JANUARY 10 @ 9:30 PM

Samita Sinha @ Joe's Pub with Dave Sharma and Sunny Jain.

In this evening at Joe's Pub, Composer and vocal artist Samita Sinha, joined by sound artist/engineer Dave Sharma and drummer Sunny Jain, will perform a series of songs that bring together the subtlety and precision of Indian classical vocal music with a raw and visceral exploration of voice and emotion to create an otherworldly sonic landscape. The program will merge analog and digital electronics and acoustic instruments with Sinha’s practice of body-sound—a way of singing that unites voice, language, tone, gesture and space.

Samita Sinha is an artist and vocalist/ composer based in New York. She combines tradition with experiment to create new forms, drawing from a deep grounding in North Indian classical music, a contemporary vocabulary, folk and ritual music, and songs and texts in several languages. Her work reconfigures given inheritances, and combines raw, visceral energy with knowledge garnered from classical tradition. As a composer/ performer and improviser, Sinha uses her voice as her primary instrument, along with tanpura and analog and digital electronics. She has performed her solo and ensemble work at PS 1, Roulette, Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concerts, Blue Note, and Issue Project Room, at universities such as UC Berkeley, NYU, Macalaster College, and St. Olaf, as well as abroad in India and the Middle East. www.samitasinha.com
